There will be Memorial Day services held in several of Cherokee County Cemeteries on Monday, May 30.
American Legion members and high school boys are invited to the Memorial Day breakfast at the Aurelia Community Center from 6 - 7 a.m. Following the breakfast, the Avenue of Flags will be put up at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Anyone who has served in the Armed Forces is invited and encouraged to march in the Aurelia Memorial Day parade - you do not have to be a member of the American Legion to march. Both former and current men and women in the military are invited to march. Veterans will meet at the Aurelia Community Center at 9:30 a.m.
The parade will assemble at the First Congregational Church, at the corner of Main and 5th Streets, and the march down Main Street will begin promptly at 10 a.m.
Following the parade, the Memorial Day program will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. There will be parking available at the cemetery- please watch for a Legion member to direct your parking. In case of incelement weather, the program will be held in the Aurelia High School gym, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The Gettysburg Address will be read by Cory Ballantyne, Lacie Sleezer will read "Flanders Field," and the response will be read by Amber Gehrts.
Pastor Bruce Rapp of the First Congregational Church will give the Invocation and Benediction.
There will also be a special flag dedication during the service.
Beginning at 11:15 a.m., Home Plate Catering will be serving a chicken and pork chop dinner, cooked on site, at the Aurelia Community Center. The cost of the meal will be $9 a person, and for children 5 and under, the cost will be $2.
Legion members - take down time for the Avenue of Flags will be 4 p.m., unless inclement weather develops earlier than that.
The Quimby American Legion will be holding services at Silver Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. and Grandview Cemetery at 10 a.m. and Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. In case of rain all three ceremonies will be held at the Quimby Community Center at 10 a.m.
The Washta American Legion will be holding services at Sunset View Cemetery at 10 a.m. and Grand Meadow Cemetery at 11 a.m.
Memorial Day Services at Liberty Cemetery, north of Meriden, will be at 10 a.m. and at the Meriden Cemetery at 11 a.m. Pastor Larry Ostercamp of Meriden Evangelical Free Church will conduct both services. In case of rain, a joint service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Meriden Community Building.
