KINGSLEY - The first round of a softball tournament at Kingsley went well for the River Valley girls, as they came away with a 4-3 victory over a good team. McKensie Fitch went the distance on the hill for the Wolverines, scattering five hits while walking five and striking out five. She also helped herself out on offense, clubbing a double, stealing a base, and scoring a run. Lexie Chester provided an RBI triple for RV, while JC Jepsen added a double. Others with hits included Olivia Goetsch, Jessica Fundermann, and Amanda Miller.
In their second game, shortened due to time limit, Newell - Fonda scored in the 6th inning to top the Wolverines, 6-5. Abbey Miller overcame a rough start on the hill for RV - giving up three runs in the first inning - to pitch the distance, allowing six hits, walking five and striking out two. Lexie Chester hit her second triple of the day, while JC Jepsen added a triple as well, while McKensie Fitch had two stolen bases and scored two runs.
RV coach Dean Norris said, "The girls played much better in this tournament, and hopefully (they'll) continue to progress as the season goes on."
