ALTA - The Class 2A third-ranked Alta-Aurelia Warriors and perennial state contender Newell-Fonda kicked off their Northwest Conference softball season with an exciting, well-played game here on Monday.
The Warriors, now 8-3, won the contest 2-0 as A-A hurler Kaitlyn McCormick went the distance in the circle, shutting out the Mustangs on three hits while walking no one and striking out nine, including her 500th career strikeout.
Lesa Turnquist and Haley Payne drove in the two A-A runs, with Payne's RBI coming on a triple.
A-A coach Dave Tunquist said his team played very well defensively, except for the one run N-F scored on throwing errors. He also complimented McCormick on her pitching performance, saying she hit her spots and changed speeds effectively. The coach said Newell-Fonda also played well and junior Jenna Falline pitched a good game.
"It was a good game to watch for the fans," said the coach.
Newell-Fonda is also 8-3 this season.
