The 11-1 Spirit Lake softball team flexed its muscle here Monday night on the way to a decisive 14-1 Lakes Conference win over Cherokee.

Shanon Shaefer took the pitching loss for the Washington High club, allowing eight earned runs on 15 hits and two walks in seven innings of work. Shaefer was plagued by shoddy defense behind her, with Cherokee commiting six costly fielding errors.

Jackie Wilson paced the WHS gals at the plate with a 3-4 night, while Hope Hoefling was 1-3 with one RBI.

Krause led the Indians' attack with a 5-5 outing, including a home run, six RBI, three doubles, and three runs scored.

Spirit Lake pitcher Vale got the win, giving up one run on eight hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

Cherokee threatened in the sixth inning by loading the bases after a single by Shanon Shaefer, a walk to Autumn Shaefer, and a Wilson single. However, Shanon Shaefer was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice grounder by Taylor Woods, before Hoefling singled in Autumn Shaefer for Cherokee's lone run in the game. A strikeout followed to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.

The WHS girls play at Storm Lake tonight, and Friday and Saturday play in the Le Mars Tournament, meeting Sioux City North at noon Friday, and Hinton at 1:45 p.m.; and on Saturday playing Sergeant Bluff-Luton at 12:45 p.m., and Le Mars Gehlen at 4:15 p.m.
