Cherokee scored its lone run in the second inning after Jackie Wilson coaxed a walk, Taylor Woods singled her to third, and Wilson scored on a single off the bat of Kaitlyn Miller. Sarah Ruehle had Cherokee's only other hit.
Horstman got the pitching win for the 6-2 Wolfpack, allowing one run on three hits and three walks, with six strikeouts in seven innings.
Shanon Shaefer took the mound loss for the WHS club, giving up six earned runs on nine hits, three walks and three wild pitches, with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 inning of work. Miller relieved Shaefer and faced eight batters and struck out two in 2 2/3 innings.
Jansen paced the HWC offense with 2-3, a double and two runs scored.
"We played good defense six out of the seven innings, but that one inning caught up with us, with them scoring five runs," said Cherokee coach Cara Lubeck.
The WHS girls (0-5) play today and Saturday in the Le Mars Tournament, meeting Sioux City North at noon today, and Hinton at 1:45 p.m.; and on Saturday playing Sergeant Bluff-Luton at 12:45 p.m., and Le Mars Gehlen at 4:15 p.m.
