Hummel, Seliger home runs key offense

EMMETSBURG - Cherokee's Zac Smith limited Emmetsburg to just one earned run on six scattered hits and two walks, and struck out eight batters to lead the Braves to a solid 7-2 Lakes Conference win over the E-Hawks here Monday night.

Smith's big night was set up early as Cherokee lead-off hitter Jakob Hummel hit the first pitch of the game for a booming home run to centerfield to key a four-run outburst that was then capped off by a crucial three-run dinger by Nate Seliger.

Seliger finished with a stellar performance, totaling three hits in four trips, three RBI, two runs scored, and a home run. Hummel was 1-4 with the homer, RBI, run scored, and one stolen base. Alanzo Ruble, Adam Poitts, Dillon Drefke, Curtis Ege, and Smith also rapped hits for the victorious Braves.

Jake Carlson took the pitching loss for Emmetsburg, allowing seven runs on nine hits, and four walks, with one strikeout in 6 2/3 innings, before being relieved by Taylor Wagner.

Bobby Gappa was 2-3 with an RBI to pace the E-Hawks.

Cherokee (3-5) plays at Manson NW Webster tonight, and in the Ridge View Tournament in Holstein Saturday.
