BOONE - The Martensdale-St. Mary's baseball team is making a bid for Iowa High School baseball history. The Blue Devils, who rolled to a 43-0 record in securing the State Class 1A Championship last summer, have started the 2011 campaign with 16 straight wins, bumping their current win streak to 59, which tied the Iowa record, set by Kee, Lansing during their back-to-back 43-1 seasons in 1991 and 1992.
The Blue Devils' latest win was a 14-0 decision at Woodward-Granger Wednesday, and they went for an Iowa record of 60 consecutive wins Thursday night at home against Winterset.
The Blue Devils could make the national list by extending the streak to at least 64, which would place them in a five-way tie for seventh. Portsmouth, N.H. with the nation's longest current winning streak tops that list with 82 straight, going into their State Tournament Championship game on Saturday; Homer, Michigan is second with 75 (2004-05); Albuquerque La Cueva, NM is third with 70 (2002-05), followed by Briarwood Archbishop Malloy, NY at 68 (1963-66); Oklahoma City Capitol Hill with 66 (1952-54); and Waxahachie, Texas with 65 (1924-27).
Last summer's State Class 2A champions, Solon, closed with 26 straight wins last year and they have started this season unbeaten in 15 games. The Spartans had a twin bill scheduled for Wednesday night with Davis County and Regina, Iowa City rained out, and were slated to host Maquoketa in a doubleheader Thursday.
