The Cherokee Washington High School girls dropped a 6-2 decision to Maurice-Orange City/Floyd Valley in non-conference softball action here Thursday.

Cherokee scored in the first inning when Autumn Shaefer singled in Jackie Wilson, who had doubled with two outs. Cherokee then loaded the bases on an error and a walk, but the runners were stranded - the first three of 12 Cherokee baserunners to end up on base at the close of an inning, including two more innings which concluded with the bases loaded.

Cherokee got their second run in the second inning when Sarh Reuhle's two-out single down the left field line scored Shanon Shaefer.

"Defensively we played a better game tonight then last night," said Cherokee coach Cara Lubeck, "but we stranded way too many people on the bases tonight (12). The team had some great hits, but unfortunately they happened to go right to the other team."

Jackie Wilson was 2 for 3 and Sarah Ruehle was 2 for 4 for Cherokee, and pitcher Shanon Shaefer went the distance, allowing three earned runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking out five.

MOC-FV stranded eight baserunners. Three of the MOC-FV runs were unearned, as Cherokee committed four errors.

The Lady Dutch hurler, Emily McDonald, gave up one earned run on eight hits, while walking six and striking out three. The Dutch committed two errors in the field.

Cherokee (2-11) plays at Lakes Conference foe Spencer tonight, then hosts Estherville Lincoln Central on Wednesday.
