MARCUS - The gritty Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn baseball team scored the winning run in the fifth inning to break up a 2-2 tie game and secure a big War Eagle Conference victory over Orange City Unity Christian here last week.
Dylan Spieler got the impressive pitching win for the Eagles of coach Al Vasher, allowing two runs on seven scattered hits and just one walk, while striking out seven batters.
Jesse Kunzweiler led the MMC offense with two triples in three trips and a run scored, while Tanner Utesch was 2-3 with a double and run scored, and John Hoefling 1-3 with a double.
"Dylan did a great job of throwing strikes," said Coach Vasher. "He was able to scatter seven hits, but did a nice job of limiting his walks. The defense played well behind him, especially Brock Moser, who had a nice defensive game.
"It was nice to play as a team after two recent losses. I was happy with how clean of a game we played, and how we made the plays when given opportunities."
MMC plays at Remsen St. Mary's tonight, and hosts Clay Central Everly Wednesday night.
