Kenneth A. Kuhnes, 88, of Cherokee, a former long time Cleghorn resident, passed away Monday, April 25, 2011 at Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 3 p.m. at the Alta Community Center. Jim Miller will officiate. The Boothby Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com.

Kenneth Arthur Kuhnes was born Sept. 7, 1922 at Lake Andes, S.D. to Arthur E. Kuhnes and Helen E. (Novotny) Kuhnes. He attended country schools in the Mitchell, S.D. area and graduated from high school at Plano, S.D. He was married to Carol Lucinda Green on Sept. 27, 1948 in Nashua. He had lived in Mitchell, S.D. and then in Cleghorn for 39 years, before moving to Cherokee. Kenneth farmed with his Dad and as a share cropper before moving to the Cleghorn area in March of 1961, where he worked as a farm hand and for the Cleghorn Cooperative Elevator. He also worked for Wilson Foods in Cherokee for 17 1/2 years. He did garden tilling and lawn mowing with his 140 John Deere garden tractor for 30 years. He was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He loved gardening, reading, and Big Band music. He especially enjoyed his religion and his large family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Carol on Oct. 18, 1999; a daughter Dawn Marie; a daughter-in-law Charlotte Kuhnes on Feb. 11, 2011; three sisters Mary Jane Kuhnes, Pearl Lorraine Waybright and her husband James and Geneva Bauer; three brothers-in-law Robert W. Green and his wife Frances, Lorin Green and his wife Esther and Roger Green; a sister- in-law Eleanor (Green) Phinney and her husband Norman.

He is survived by his eight children and their spouses: Marlene and Alan Johnson of Cherokee; Kevin and Barbara Kuhnes of Cleghorn; Dwight and Vickie Kuhnes of Storm Lake; Maynard Kuhnes of Storm Lake; Jeanine and Timothy Morrow of Storm Lake; Lorna and Brent Lawrey of Meriden; Melanie and Michael Tucker of Cherokee; Anita and Tal Steig of Sutherland; 14 grandsons, 14 granddaughters; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law Paul Bauer of Sioux Center; and a sister-in-law Neoma Green of Hill City, S.D.
