SPIRIT LAKE - The tradition-rich Spirit Lake girls clipped youthful Cherokee 9-4 in an entertaining Lakes Conference softball game here Thursday night.

Shanon Shaefer took the pitching loss for Cherokee, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits and one walk, with two strikeouts in six innings of work.

Jackie Wilson furnished some firepower for the Cherokee batters, stroking a two-run home run and scoring a run. Autum Shaefer was a perfect 4-4 from the plate, with four singles.

Paige Krause got the pitching win for the Indians, allowing two runs on seven scattered hits, one walk, and three strikeouts in four innings. Sami Ashland pitched three innings for the hosts, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, with two Ks.

Ali Gerking slammed a home run for the winners and was 2-4 with three runs scored, and Krause was 3-4 with two doubles and a run scored.

The high-flying Indians are now 17-5 this season.

Cherokee, now 3-13 over all and 2-7 in Lakes Conference action, plays at Hull Western Christian tonight, and hosts Storm Lake Wednesday, and Estherville-LC and Emmetsburg Thursday.

The E-LC game Thursday is a weather makeup with varsity beginning at 3 p.m., with the game against Emmetsburg to follow the Cherokee/E-Burg JV game that starts at 5:30 p.m.
