Below are details for two upcoming livestock-related events in our region. Contact and registration information is also provided.
Manure Management Field Day -- A Manure Management Field Day is scheduled for July 13, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Mike Bettin Feedlot near Odebolt. The field day will provide information and technical assistance to small and medium-sized dairies and open feedlots in regard to manure management issues.
Because feedlot producers can no longer discharge feedlot effluent into a road ditch, this year's field day will include a demonstration of an economical way to pump feedlot effluent from the solids settling system. The field day will also include a demonstration on how to calibrate a manure spreader.
Other field day topics include:
* What is a medium CAFO
* Counting animal numbers
* How to prevent being defined a medium CAFO
* Manure storage and handling
* Manure sample analysis & what it means for your cropping system
* Technical assistance and cost-share opportunities
There is no charge for the field day. For more information, you may call the Sac County Extension Office at 712-662-7131.
Beef Facilities Tour & BQA Training -- On August 25, there will be a beef facilities tour in the Holstein, area, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tour stops include producers discussing cattle management and performance in several types of facilities -- deep-bedded hoop barns; deep-bedded wide mono-slope barns; and a gable-roofed beef barn.
Along the tour, specialists from ISU Extension, Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers, Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Department of Natural Resources will informally share information about animal welfare, building design, environmental regulations and managing manure.
Concluding the tour, participants will have dinner at the Brett Friedrichsen farm. A Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training session will be conducted 7-8:30 p.m. by Matt Deppe, Director of Industry Relations for the Iowa Beef Industry Council, and the Holstein Veterinary Clinic. The session will allow producers to certify or re-certify in BQA.
Please contact the Ida County Extension Office at 712-364-3003 by Aug. 22 if you plan to attend or have questions. Further details will be coming.
