The Cherokee Braves 2011 varsity football schedule is finalized, with the Braves playing 10 games this fall after picking up an extra game in Week Zero (August 19) that kicks off the Iowa high school football season for many schools, with bye weeks during the season factored in.
Spirit Lake, a Class 3A school in District football, needed a game to fill out its nine-game schedule and Class 2A Cherokee Washington High Athletic Director Neil Phipps said the Braves were happy to fill that vacancy to help a fellow Lakes Conference member and to give the young Braves, without a great deal of varsity experience returning, "one more game" to get them acclimated to varsity action.
Cherokee travels to Spirit Lake August 19, giving them six road games out of their 10-game schedule. The road games, which will total an estimated 1,000 round-trip miles, also include trips to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (September 2), Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto (September 9), JSPC Jefferson (September 23), Carroll Kuemper (September 30), and Missouri Valley/West Harrison (October 21).
Because Missouri Valley and West Harrison have merged their football programs, which now puts them in Class 3A, that District game has already been automatically forfeited to the 2A Braves, although the plans are to still play it in Missouri Valley, according to Phipps.
Cherokee has four home games against Storm Lake (August 26), Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove (September 16), East Sac County (October 7), and Southern Cal (October 14).
Prep football practice in Iowa officially begins on Monday, August 8.
