Library News

Thursday, June 30, 2011

The last day of June means the summer is flying by. And although that's fine with me since I'm one who prefers cooler temps, less humidity and lawns that do not require constant mowing, I'm sure there are people out there who are not anxious to turn the page over to July. It always seems once the 4th is over, summer is a rapid downhill slide.

This has been one busy summer for the Cherokee Public Library. We are thrilled to report that the first two sessions of the summer reading program drew in about 150 kids.

We have not had numbers like that since the early 90's and we are anxious to see if attendance stays at that level or drops off as the weeks go by.

Our biggest concern (and what a great one to have!) is that we do not have an enough space anywhere in the library to accommodate such large groups. We extend a hearty thank you to the staff at the Sanford Museum for helping us out. Even their room has been seriously crowded so we will have to rethink things before 2012. Like I said... it's a great problem to have.

One problem that's not so great to have is a lack of water in a building. We had short notice that we needed to be closed this past Tuesday due to sewer repair work in the alley and I hope it was not an inconvenience for anyone.

Our restrooms are in constant use so facing a day without them was not something we wanted to do. In addition to our own patrons, we do quite a bathroom business with travelers going through town on Highway 59.

And speaking of travelers, I remind everyone that the library and the Cherokee Area Archives will be open Saturday, July 2nd from 10am -- noon. If you have out of towners coming for the all school reunion, it would be a good time to stop in and take a look at historical Cherokee materials such as old yearbooks. We will also be here Friday from 10 am -- 5 pm with the Archives staffed from 1:30-4 pm.

Coming up later in the month will be two more chilren's programs and a crazy days book sale. Pick up a July newsletter for dates, times and details.

Regular open summer hours are Monday & Thursday 10 am -- 8 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 10 am -- 5 pm and Saturday 10 am -- noon. The library will be closed on Monday, July 4th. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!
