LE MARS - It was over in a hurry for the Cherokee Washington High softball team in its final Lakes Conference regular season game here Tuesday night, with the host Bulldogs dismissing Cherokee 12-0 in a three-inning game called early due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Le Mars enters Class 3A Regional Tournament play this week with a 20-12 record, including a 10-3 Lakes Conference mark, while Cherokee (5-23, 3-11) takes on Hinton at 7 p.m. in Cherokee tonight in Class 2A Regional action.
Shanon Shaefer took the pitching loss for the WHS girls, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits and one walk in three innings of work.
Shaefer also led her team at bat with a 2-2 game, while older sister Autumn Shaefer and Clare Tuttle also stroked singles for Cherokee.
Le Mars hurler Jordyn Heidebrink limited the WHS club to no runs on four hits and two walks in three innings.
Kommes was 2-3 with two doubles and two runs scored for the winners, and Ellefson was 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
"Le Mars hit the ball very well tonight and placed them in the gaps where there wasn't anything we could do about it," said Cherokee coach Cara Lubeck.
