The Cherokee Washington High softball team came through with some timely hits at opportune times to eke out an exciting 8-7 Class 2A Regional Tournament opener over Sibley-Ocheyedan in Cherokee Thursday night.

Jackie Wilson came to play in this game, leading the WHS gals at the plate with a 2-4 night, including a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Wilson also scored her team's winning run after doubling in the seventh, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Clare Tuttle, and scoring on an RBI fielder's choice ground-out by Tasha Larsen. She cracked her two-run home run in the first inning.

Also for Cherokee, Autumn Shaefer was 3-4 with three singles, two RBI, and a run scored. Sarah Ruehle collected two hits and scored twice for the winners.

Shanon Shaefer got the win for Cherokee on the mound, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and five walks, with two strikeouts in seven innings.

"The team hit the ball very well tonight and came through with some huge hits that allowed us to score runs when we needed to," said Cherokee coach Cara Lubeck. "Our defense was also very solid and didn't allow any extra baserunners on."

Cherokee continues down the tourney trail with a 5-23 record, while Sibley-Ocheyedan hangs up the cleats with a 6-18 mark.
