ALTA - The Alta-Aurelia girls beat Cherokee 6-0 in Class 2A Regional softball quarterfinal play here on Friday.

A-A, now 26-6, was paced at the plate by Haley Payne, who clubbed a home run and drove in three runs, Alexis Hernandez, who was 2-3 and drove in two, and Audrey Winterhof, who was 2-2 and stole a base.

Katlyn McCormick got the win, pitching a seven-inning 2-hit shutout, walking two and striking out seven.

For Cherokee, which finishes its season with a 6-24 overall record, their two hits were singles by Sarah Reuhle and Autumn Shaefer.

Losing pitcher Shanon Shaefer gave up six runs, three of them earned, in six innings of work in the pitcher's circle. She allowed eight hits, walked one, hit one batter and struck out two.

The two Cherokee hits came in the last inning, after which Jackie Wilson drew a walk to load the bases for Cherokee. A fly out, a fielder's choice with Reuhle being thrown out a home, and a strikeout ended the inning, the game, and, for Cherokee, the season.

Cherokee coach Cara Lubeck said her team made some great defensive plays in the contest, but just weren't able to get hits when they needed them.
