AKRON - Proving why they're defending State Champions and owners of a #1 ranking and sparkling 32-1 record this season, the Akron-Westfield girls hammered Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn 10-0 in Class 1A Regional semifinal action here Monday night.
The Westerners pounded out 12 hits and tallied 10 runs in the seven inning game, with losing pitcher Kayla Foresman walking two and striking out none.
Brandi Davis got the mound win for A-W, giving up five hits, walking two, and striking out just one batter in the shutout victory. Davis struck out 11 Eagles last time the teams played ( a 4-2 A-W win), and just one this time around.
A-W leadoff batter Haley Coyle was on fire, finishing with a 4-4 effort, two RBI, a double, and run scored. Tasha Johnson also was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, with four RBI and a run scored, and Monica Harvey was 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Stephanie Specht paced the MMC offense a 2-2 game, while Foresman poked a ouble, and Dreckman and reagan McDaniel a single apiece.
"We did not play our game," said MMC coach Leo Hupke. "Erica was not herself by any means, but Akron-Westfield is a strong team with some great athletes. This just wasn't our night at all."
MMC ends its season with a shiny 23-8 record, with three of those losses to A-W.
