ALTA - Senior standout Ryan Friedrich hurled a no-hit shutout and also smacked three hits, stole two bases, and drove in a run to lead his Alta-Aurelia Warriors to a 3-0 win over Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer (10-12) in Class 2A District Tournament baseball action here on Tuesday.
Christian Weiland contributed two hits to the Alta-Aurelia attack and Chris Bengtson and James Curbow had one hit apiece for the Warriors, who stole eight bases in the game.
Nelson Shimon took the loss for the Indians, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits. He walked two and struck out nine. A-A's Friedrich walked five and also struck out nine.
Alta-Aurelia (28-4) will take on Spirit Lake, a 6-0 winner over North Sentral Kossuth/Armstrong-Ringsted, in Spencer on Saturday. The winner of that game will then play in a Substate game on Tuesday, also in Spencer, for the right to go to the State Tournament in Des Moines.
Alta-Aurelia coach Dan Wendel said, "We have a tough opponent coming up on Saturday night and we will have to be ready to play a complete game, both offensively and defensively. I think we are playing great baseball right now and we need to continue this as the tournament games will get more difficult each night out."
