Cherokee Swim Team having successful season

Friday, July 15, 2011

The Cherokee Swim Team took to the water in their first away dual meet of the season at Rockwell City. After a shower passed through just a few events into the meet, the meet resumed under much clearer skies. Because of the rain delay, the meet ended after event #62, which meant that about 20 events were not swum, and some swimmers only competed in two of their individual events. Despite the shortened meet, Cherokee still had two triple winners, four double winners and twelve individual event winners during the meet.

The triple winners were Curtis Riedemann and Halie Kraft. Curtis won the 8 & under boys' 25m backstroke in a time of :33.05, the 25m breaststroke in :44.34, and the 25m freestyle in :25.7. Halie won the 13-14 girls' 100m freestyle in 1:20.83, the 50m butterfly in :40.62 and the 50m freestyle in a time of :36.57.

The dual winners were Brett Barritt in the 13-14 boys' 50m backstroke in :46.31 and the 50m freestyle in :34.36; Aliyah Graybill in the 8 & under girls' 25m breaststroke in :35.78 and in the 25m freestyle in :30.03; Trevor Lundquist in the 9-10 boys' age group, where he took the 50m freestyle in a time of :46.78 and the 25m freestyle in :19.37; and Lindsay Williams in the 11-12 girls' 50m butterfly, with a time of :46.05 and in the 50m freestyle in :38.43.

The list of single winners starts with the 8 & under age group, where Jacklyn Goettsch won the girls' 25m butterfly in :57.87, Kenna Mongan took the 25m backstroke in :34.16, and Jaylyn Vandervort won the 50m freestyle in a time of 1:41.12. Relay wins were confined to the medley relays, as the freestyle relays were not swum, but out of the 10 possible age groups, Cherokee had teams in eight of them and won six of those races. The 8 & under girls' 100m Medley Relay team of Rayann Patterson, Aliyah Graybill, Kenna Mongan and Jaylyn Vandervort took first in a time of 3:00.26, while the boys in that age group finished in 2:32.9 to take first with the team of Brock and Brandon Mier, Curtis Riedemann and Dawson Ducommun.

There were again many instances of swimmers coming in second only to teammates, creating some fun races and great motivation for the team. That list begins with the 8 & under age group. On the boys' side of that age group, Matthew Stieneke was second in both the 50m freestyle, which he finished in :48.39, and the 25m freestyle, which he clocked at :20.06 and Trevor Lundquist was a close second in the 25m backstroke ,where he went :26.47.

It was a perfect night for a swim meet when the Cherokee Swim Team hosted the Storm Lake Swim team in a dual meet on Wed. June 29 at the Bacon Aquatic Center. Over 100 swimmers participated in the meet, which lasted until almost 9pm. It was another night of great improvements and close races.

Only one Cherokee swimmer won all three of their individual events during the meet, and that was Curtis Riedemann, who took first in the 8 & under boys' 25m backstroke in :35.29, the 25m breaststroke in :40.99 and the 25m freestyle in :25.28.

Five swimmers won two individual events, including Kaely Hummel, who took first in the 11-12 girls' 100m freestyle in 1:18.38 and in the 50m freestyle in :34.67. In her third event, Kaely was less than a second behind a teammate in a very close 100m Individual Medley race that she clocked at 1:33.83. Of the 16 "A" relay events the Cherokee team competed in, they won ten of them. The 8 & under girls won both their relay events. In the 100m Medley Relay, the team of Rayann Patterson, Jacklyn Goettsch, Kenna Mongan and Sarah Mesler won in 2:57.69; while in the 100m Free Relay, it was Aliyah Graybill, Mesler, Goettsch and Mongan winning in 2:17.72. In addition to the races already mentioned, there were several other races where swimmers finished in second place behind teammates. In the 9-10 girls' 25m freestyle, Taylor Richardson was only about a half second behind when she took second in a time of :20.48; Megan Brown was also in second place behind a teammate in the 100m freestyle event, where she posted a time of 1:49.69. There was another record broken this year; during the first home meet of the season, two Cherokee swimmers broke the 11-12 girls' 100m freestyle record from 1978, held by Michelle Pickens. The previous record of 1:17.78 was smashed by Kaely Hummel in her close victory, where she posted a winning time of 1:14.99.

Cherokee has a home meet on Wednesday July 13, and then finish with three away meets on Saturday July 16, Wednesday July 20 and Saturday July 23. The team will then have their awards picnic on Sunday July 24.
