Wednesday, July 20, 2011

For those out and about in Cherokee on Tuesday, water over U.S. Highway 59 from the swollen Little Sioux River allowed travelers to receive an under-wash of their vehicles. The flooded river also forced the closing of East Main Street heading in and out of Cherokee on Monday afternoon. As of Tuesday, the Little Sioux River was over five feet past flood stage, measuring 22.65 feet at 7 a.m. that morning. A measurement of the river that was taken by Cherokee Flood Committee Chairman Richard Boothby at noon on Tuesday was also 22.65 feet, indicating that the river hadn't risen any further and would likely be cresting Tuesday afternoon.
