Warriors beat HWC in 2A Sub-State

SPENCER - The 10th-ranked Alta-Aurelia boys rallied late to beat Hull Western Christian 17-7 in six innings in a Class 2A District Sub-State game here on Tuesday.

The win sends the Warriors, 30-4, to next week's State Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines.

Ryan Friedrich clubbed four hits and drove in four runs for Alta-Aurelia, and third baseman Jaden Holton also drove in four runs. Friedrich, Neil Marshall and Austin Delp each scored three times for the Warriors, who smacked 15 hits, 12 of them off losing pitcher Collin Faber.

The senior Friedrich started on the hill for Coach Dan Wendel's Warriors, going 4 1/3 innings and giving up five earned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out eight. Christian Weiland picked up the win in relief, going 1 2/3 innings and allowing one (unearned) run on two hits, while walking two and striking out three.

The win was the 13th in a row for Alta-Aurelia and their 27th win in their last 28 games since starting the season 3-3. Their only loss in the last 28 games was an 11-1 loss in their first game against Lawton-Bronson (30-4), which lost 12-0 to #1 ranked Kuemper Catholic Tuesday night in its chance to advance to State in Class 2A.

Alta-Aurelia has been seeded 7th at the State Tournament, and will meet second-seeded Davis County of Bloomfield (30-4) in a first-round game at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Davis County, Bloomfield has notched 20 consecutive wins since losing a one - run game to Durant-Bennett in the Burlington Tournament on June 18. This is Alta-Aurelia's first trip to the State, though Alta was a semifinalist in 2009.
