This week's column is courtesy of a guest writer. I enjoy having a break and there is a message from Sharon Fliear of the Cherokee Area Archives that needs to be shared as the Archives looks for new volunteers to supplement the faithful ones they have. It could be a fun activity for anyone looking to fill an afternoon.
Please consider helping out, as we want to keep the Archives up and running in the manner we have been accustomed to.
From Sharon... For those of you that haven't visited the Cherokee Area Archives located in our library's lower level, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to a real "treasure" to Cherokee County and invite you to come see us. We have had a surprised reaction and many favorable comments from visitors at the amount of information we have available, going back to the very beginning of Cherokee County.
Our volunteers are on duty Monday -- Friday from l:30 p.m. -- 4 p.m. and eager to assist you in finding information relating to the history of the County, families, businesses, schools, government, births, deaths, marriages, cemetery records, military information, and much, much more.
Opportunities also exist for those of you that are looking for something part-time, flexible and addicting to do as a volunteer. Once you have helped someone find information they have been searching for and get the grateful reaction -- you are "hooked." It is like solving a mystery in many cases, and almost always leads to more clues and information.
The only qualifications are first and foremost, "people skills," basic computer and copier/scanning abilities for responding to e-mails, a real desire to help provide answers to questions or other sources to obtain information, and flexibility with the work schedule in extreme circumstances. This invitation is for both men and women with an interest in local history -- and both long time and short time residents. It is a most rewarding use of your time to yourself and to the community. If you have further questions regarding volunteering, please feel free to contact Phyllis Parrott at 225-5265, Jan Witcombe at 225-3740, or Sharon Fliear at 225-0136.
The library is currently operating on the annual summer schedule. Open hours are Monday & Thursday 10 a.m. -- 8 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 10 a.m. -- 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. -- noon. This schedule will be in effect until after Labor Day weekend. Stop in and take a look at the book saleroom. There are some good bargains.
