On Saturday July 16, the Cherokee Swim Team made an early morning trip to Algona to swim a make-up meet on an extremely hot morning against a tough Algona team. With only 41 swimmers the Cherokee team was not at full strength, but they still had a good meet and posted some great times. Algona's team was also at less than full strength, but they still had plenty of swimmers to make it great competition for all the swimmers.
Triple winners for Cherokee included Brett Barritt, who won the 13-14 boys' 100m freestyle in 1:21.5, the 50m backstroke in :44.73 and the 50m freestyle in :33.5; Halie Kraft, who won the 13-14 girls' 100m freestyle in 1:15.7, the 50m butterfly in :38.4, and the 50m freestyle in :34.23; and Kylie Mongan, who won the 11-12 girls' 100m freestyle in 1:19.06, the 50m backstroke in :43.39, and the 100m Individual Medley in 1:33.51.
Double winners were Tyler Richardson, who won the 11-12 boys' 50m breaststroke in :53.5 and the 50m freestyle in :42.37; Matthew Stieneke, who won the 25m backstroke in :24.65 and the 25m freestyle in :20.11 in the 9-10 boys age group; Lindsay Williams, who won the 11-12 girls' 50m butterfly in :40.05 and the 50m freestyle in :34.82.
Single event winners included Megan Brown in the 9-10 girls' 100m freestyle, which she finished in 1:47.19; Calvin Chalstrom in the 13-14 boys' 100m I.M., in :2:02.59; Dawson Ducommun in the 8 & under boys' 50m freestyle, in 1:14.00; Taylor Hirschman in the 13-14 girls' 100m I.M., in 1:51.39; Kaeleb Royster in the 11-12 boys' 100m freestyle ,in 1:47.09; brother Kameron Royster in the 8 & under boys' 100m I.M., in 2:53.99; and Brianna Sleezer in the 9-10 girls' 25m backstroke, in :24.05.
The team also posted three relay wins during the meet - The 11-12 girls' 200m Medley team of Kylie Mongan, Alyssa Trapp, Lindsay Williams and Jennifer Barritt won in 2:57.42; the 9-10 boys' team of Matthew Stieneke, Kaiden Royster, Trevor Lundquist and Carson Mongan won the 100m Freestyle Relay in 1:28.64; and the 13-14 boys' 200m Freestyle Relay team of Brett Barritt, Calvin Chalstrom, Tyler Richardson and Kaeleb Royster won the 200m freestyle relay in 3:06.16.
On July 23, the Cherokee Swim Team traveled to Rockwell City, where they faced off against the other ten conference teams in the AHEELA Conference Meet. 476 swimmers competed in the 87 events, and the meet was run very smoothly and efficiently.
Rockwell City had the top boys' team score, Algona led the girls, and Algona also posted the top combined team score.
The Cherokee Swim Team took third place out of the 11 teams in the girls' competition, and the Cherokee team was also named the West Conference Season Sportsmanship winner.
