The town of Aurelia held a "Welcome Home Celebration" at the Aurelia Community Center at 7 p.m. on Friday for several local National Guardsmen, all of whom are members of the 34th Infantry "Red Bull" Division. Although it was another warm Iowa summer day, the Guardsmen probably felt it was like air conditioning compared to the climate in which they have been operating recently. Said Sgt. Louie DeRoos of Aurelia about the current Iowa weather conditions, "I'll take it!"
A good - sized crowd filled the community center to welcome the troops back home and enjoy the food and fellowship.
Mike Fry, who has been a teacher and coach in the Aurelia School for many years, said that though he was still in the process of getting things straightened out at his house, he had made a visit to the school in Aurelia already since his arrival home.
Welcome back, all of you, and thanks for serving your country. May it be a long time before you are called away again.
