Area schools start this week

The 2011-2012 school year gets under way at many area schools this week.

In Cherokee, students at Washington High School have orientation tonight from 7 - 8:30 p.m., Roosevelt Elementary will have their "Meet the Teacher Night" on Tuesday from 5:30 - 7 p.m, with the Cherokee Cattleman's Association grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for the occasion., and Cherokee Middle School will also have a "Meet the Teacher" night from 7 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with root beer floats available on site in the Middle School Commons.

Classes begin in all of the Cherokee District schools on Thursday, August 18. The Cherokee Braves football team plays an opening non-district game this Friday, August 19, at Spirit Lake.

In Aurelia, the school district begins its whole-grade sharing with the Alta district this fall. A 'Back to School Night' will be held in both districts on Tuesday, with the following schedule : 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the elementary schools in both Aurelia and Alta ; 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Middle School in Aurelia; and 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the High School in Alta. A mock schedule will be available for all parents and students who are new to the High School.

Wednesday is the first day of classes for students, and classes will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. that day. No lunch will be served. On Thursday, classes will dismiss at 1:45 p.m., and Friday will have the regular dismissal time of 3:30 p.m.

Families who missed registration may register in either Alta or Aurelia prior to the beginning of school. The Alta-Aurelia Warriors will play their opening game of the football season on Friday night, Aug. 19, in Akron against Akron-Westfield.

River Valley will be having orientation for elementary and Middle School students from 5 - 7:30 p.m. in Washta this Wednesday, and high school students will have orientation in Correctionville at 7 p.m. on that same evening. Classes begin in both buildings on the following day, Thursday August 18. River Valley begins its football season on Friday, Aug. 19, with a game in Dunlap against Boyer Valley.

Ridge View students start classes this Thursday, August 18, but the Raptors' first football game isn't until next Friday, August 26, when they host Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove in Holstein.

Students in the South O'Brien school district will begin classes on Tuesday, August 23. There will be an Open House for Junior High and High School students and their parents on Monday August 22, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., and another Open House for Elementary students and parents on Thursday August 25, from 5 - 7 p.m. The South O'Brien football team kicks off its season this Friday, August 19th, with a game against West Sioux at Hawarden.

Classes in the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn district will start on Wednesday, August 24, but orientation for 7th graders will be held from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. this Friday, Aug. 19, and orientation for freshmen and new students will also be held on Aug. 19, from noon until 2 p.m. Attendance is required. The Eagles' football team also begins its season this Friday, Aug. 19, hosting Sioux Central.
