John Benton Fry was born on Feb. 23, 1920 at Granville, the son of Roy A. and Vera M. (Pattison) Fry. He graduated from Orange City High School. In April of 1942, John enlisted in the United States Army and served with the Army Air Corps.
On June 20, 1942, at the Carmel Lutheran Church in Marcus, John was united in marriage to Doris L. Nelson. They lived in California until John was sent overseas during WWII. He was a radio repair technician and attained the rank of Sergeant prior to his Honorable Discharge in December of 1945. Following his return from the service, John and Doris farmed for two years near Merrill, then later moved and farmed near Marcus. John and Doris shared the duties of the busy farming operation while they raised their children.
John was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus. He served as a board member for the ASCS and worked part-time at Sands Seed Service. John belonged to the Grand Spinners Square Dance Club, Marcus Golf Club and various Pinochle clubs. Upon retiring from farming, John could be found most afternoons either on the golf course or downtown playing Pinochle. He was active in the community and assisted with various projects. John and Doris traveled extensively throughout the years by auto, bus tours and Elderhostel trips covering every state.
Preceding John in death are his parents; and wife, Doris on December 19, 2009.
John is survived by his children, Linda (Gary) Ask of Moorhead, Minn., John (Sharon) Fry of Sheridan, Ore., Margaret Martens of Sauk Rapids, Minn. and Barb (Donn) DeVelder of New Ulm, Minn.; his eight grandchildren, Kevin (Renae) Ask, Jessica (Ryan) Price, Justin Fry, Jennifer Martens, Alyssa (Ryan) Noreen, Kathryn DeVelder, Eric DeVelder and Ryan DeVelder; five great-grandchildren; a brother Donald (Ruth) Fry of Tucson, Ariz.; and numerous other relatives and friends.
