Joan Ballantyne of Cherokee received the Federal Political Coordination Meritorious Service Award from the National Association of REALTORS∆ (NAR) at the mid-year meeting in May.

Each year NAR give the award to two FPCs who have demonstrated a long history of commitment of NAR and the REALTOR∆ Party Agenda. They have effectively advocated NAR issues to their members of Congress and ensured they understand real estate's most important issues. They have forged lasting relationships with their Members of Congress and established themselves as the "go-to" expert on real estate issues. NAR likes to refer to these individuals as the "face of real estate in the district."

Ballantyne has been a licensed REALTOR∆ in Iowa for more than 50 years and the broker/owner of Delta Properties in Cherokee since 2008. She has served in many leadership and political roles at the local, state, and national level. The list of her achievements is lengthy and impressive, and her contributions have had a significant impact on associations to which she belongs.

She is the FPC for Congressman Tom Latham. She has had a long history of dedication to her entire Congressional Delegation in Iowa, effectively advocating on real estate issues with each of them. She is regularly in touch with Congressman Latham and his staff and can always get a call through or a visit in the office.

She has held several leadership positions with the NAR and received the NAR Distinguished Service Award in 2000. She served on the Federal Political Communications Committee for many years and as an RPAC Trustee. She has been a member of the Women's Council of REALTORS∆ since 1972, and served as national president in 1988.

Ballantyne has been active in the IAR for nearly three decades. She served as president in 1981 and received the REALTOR∆ of the Year Award in 1983. She received the L. Martin Lee Political Involvement Award form the IAR in 2009. In 2009 the O.G. Powell Award was adapted to also honor Joan and the O.G. Powell/Joan Ballantyne Distinguished Service Award was first given in 2009.

She has been a Sterling "R" RPCA contributor for 19 years and served as vice president RPAC/chair of the public policy coordinating committee. She has chaired numerous IAR committees and currently serves on the strategic planning, executive, legislative, legal action, and mediation committees.

Ballantyne was appointed to serve on the Iowa Real Estate Commission by Governor Terry Brandstad, and served on the Advisory Counsel of the Real Estate Education Program at the University of Northern Iowa.

She also provides leadership on her local board, the United Counties Board of REALTORS∆, serving as president and numerous other roles throughout the years.
