Candidate filing under way for City Council positions

Friday, September 2, 2011

The business of city government and local leadership presents a unique opportunity for interested citizens to resolve issues, accomplish goals, and affect the future of your community.

The City of Cherokee conducts business on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m., with additional work sessions possible during budget season (December--March) and special meetings when necessary. Council members are assigned as liaisons to the various city departments.

This year the Ward 1 and Ward 3 Council positions, and one at-large Council position, will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. All are four-year terms of office.

In order to hold office in the city, a candidate must be an eligible elector, meeting the same qualifications required to vote, and be a resident of the city he or she plans to serve.

In the case of a Ward position, the candidate must live within the Ward boundaries. Nomination papers and Ward maps are available at the City Clerk's office. Nominees must obtain at least 25 eligible signatures. Candidate filing began Aug. 29 and ends with papers due at the City Clerk's office by 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.

Cherokee has many talented and energetic people. Please consider being of service to your community in this regard. For more information about how to participate in the city's decision-making process, please contact Deb Taylor, City Clerk at 225-5749.
