PAULLINA - The South O'Brien Wolverines picked up their first football win of the season Friday night with a solid 17-7 victory over the Ridge View Raptors.
The first half was a scoreless affair for both teams, as the defenses played well and some timely penalties killed drives for both teams. The third quarter provided all of the scoring for the night. It started with 10:30 to go with a 26-yard interception return for a TD by Ridge View's Austin Graff.
The Wolverines were forced to punt it away on their next drive, but pinned Ridge View deep in their own territory and a shotgun snap over the quarterback's head went out of the back of the end zone for a safety and made the score 7-2.
SOS then got the ball back after the kick and put together a nice drive with Zach Nieman breaking for a 40 yard touchdown run with 4:33 to go. Nieman also ran in the two point conversion.
Adam Paulsen kept the Wolverines going with a 32 yard interception return to the 10 yard line, and with 3:15 to go in the third, QB Paulsen sneaked in from the 1- yard line and Michael Callahan kicked the extra point.
Ridge View did drive the ball down to the 4-yard line in the fourth quarter, but Adam Paulsen picked off his second interception of the night in the end zone on a 4th and 4 play from the 4-yard line.
South O;Brien coach Mark Fuhrman felt that overall the Wolverines did a pretty good job of controlling Ridge View's passing attack. Though they gave up some longer plays, they didn't give up touchdowns on those big plays.
Offensively, Zach Nieman ended the night with 37 carries for 265 yards rushing to lead the Wolverines' attack. Paulsen was 1-9 passing for 12 yards and two picks.
Seth Johnson was 5-23 passing for the Raptors with four costly interceptions. Dru Kenny rushed 16 times for 75 yards, and Johnson 13 times for five yards to lead the Ridge View rushing attack.
This week, SOS travels to Pocahontas Area for its first district game, and Ridge View travels to IKM Manning.
