It seems a little early to be thinking about the Christmas season but that is just what the Friends of the Cherokee Public Library are doing. They will meet next week on Monday, Sept. 12 at 4:15 p.m. to discuss and start preparations for their annual book basket auction.
Each basket offered for bids will have a book of some type in it and other items related to the book. Favorites in the past have included gardening, cooking, quilting, children's stories, best sellers etc. Baskets appropriate for men with themes such as fishing are also good money makers.
There are empty baskets available at the library to be picked up and filled, and we will take donations of nice baskets (not the Easter variety) that are good sized. They need to be big enough to hold a book and its accompanying "stuff." They also need be clean and in good shape.
This year as usual the baskets will be put on display close to the first of November with final bids being accepted on Saturday, Dec. 3. So anytime people have baskets ready to go, they are welcome to drop them at the library. We appreciate having a list of the contents and an approximate total value for the basket. We also need contact information for the person or group who is donating it.
I know for sure that this year's selections will include one called "Tickled Pink" that's being put together by the READit group. The library staff will offer one that holds a guide and items to help get organized. I'm also certain that Iowa and Iowa State will be represented. There are always lots of neat ideas and some unusual offerings. Watch for more information as we go through the fall months.
And speaking of fall, we are back on a schedule of open hours that includes Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Open hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10 a.m. -- 8 p.m., Tuesday and Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. -- 2 p.m. Bookmarks with hours are available and there is an answering machine that picks up and gives the schedule as well as any closing announcements.
Please call 225-3498 if you have any questions about the Friends project.
