Forestry Field Day highlights Iowa Tree Farmer of Year

AMES -- Iowa State University Forestry Extension, Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forestry Bureau and the Iowa Tree Farm Association will host an educational field day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Brian Fulton's tree farm near Cherokee on Thursday, Sept.22.

The Fulton tree farm is being honored as Iowa Tree Farm of the Year, said ISU Extension Forester Jesse Randall. "The workshop will highlight many of the forestry practices that Brian has implemented on the farm over the years, as well as give participants a chance to interact with and ask questions to district and consulting foresters."

After a brief introduction to the property, participants will view several walnut and black cherry plantings that utilize trainer trees to improve the walnut tree growth and form. Participants will learn thinning and crop tree release methods with live demonstrations throughout the afternoon. Identifying and controlling invasive species and available forestry cost share programs will also be covered at the field day.

If you have ever wondered how and when to properly prune a tree, this field day will give you live demonstrations of proper pruning techniques, and a chance for one on one instruction to take the fear out of pruning your own trees. This field day is free, open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend. Please dress accordingly as we will be outside rain or shine!

To get to the Fulton tree farm, from the corner of Highway 3 and State Highway 977 (the bypass around Cherokee) head east on Highway 3 approximately 1.5 miles to County Highway M-10 (also labeled on some maps as County Highway C). Head north on M-10 for five miles and take a right (east) at the T intersection (480th Street). Go mile on 480th and turn back to the North on Smith Road. In one mile, Smith Road will turn to the east and the tree farm is directly north of the curve. There will be field day signs posted at the entrance to the tree farm on Smith Road.
