Cherokee Symphony organizes for 2011-2012 Concert season

Monday, September 12, 2011

The Cherokee Symphony Orchestra and Board of Directors look forward to great anticipation to the 2011-2012 concert season.

Most people in the area are familiar with the Symphony's history. People who are new to the area, might wish to know the Symphony was co-founded in 1956 by local residents, Merle Robinson and Della Beth Thomson, when "orchestra" was offered by the Adult Education Program.

This 60-member orchestra provides the community with the highest quality musical entertainment while giving musicians in the area a semi-professional outlet for their talents.

Maestro Lee Thorson, a cellist and instructor form Storm Lake, has been conductor since 1981. Interested musicians may contact Thorson at 712-732-1497 to arrange for an audition.

This year all concerts will be held Sundays at the Cherokee Community Center at 4 p.m. The ever-popular Pops Concert will be October 30. Popcorn and punch will be available at no charge. Maestro Thorson will be recognized for his 30th year as conductor. Come and have some fun at the symphony.

The Mid-Winter Concert will be March 4, 2012. Ted Halberg of Le Mars will be guest conductor.

The final concert of the season, the Young Artists' Concert, will be April 22, 2012, and will showcase the winners of auditions held earlier. It is always thrilling to hear these young soloists perform.

Recently the annual membership letter was mailed to previous and potential subscribers advising them that Cherokee Symphony Association Memberships are now available.

Also, Program Advertiser space can be purchased. Both of these support the symphony and assure the best programming available as well as future programming.

Please consider supporting the Cherokee Symphony through membership or advertising. If you are new to the area, the Symphony Board will be pleased to add your name to its mailing list. Pleas write to P.O. Box 25 or contact Chairman Donna M. Hicks at 225-5216 or visit www.cherokeesymphony.org.
