Funeral services for Helen Bryan, 92, of Aurelia, were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12 at the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Missy Brown officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service, with the family present, at the First United Methodist Church.
Helen died Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center, in Aurelia where she had been a resident since 2009.
The Redig Funeral Home of Aurelia was in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
Helen Geraldine Miller was born Feb. 25, 1919 at Shell Rock, Iowa, the daughter of William and Marie (Thompson) Miller. Helen attended schools in Shell Rock and Cedar Falls, where she graduated in 1937. She then attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On Aug. 20, 1939 Helen married Carlos Bryan in Cedar Falls. She later also attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. Helen taught elementary school for more than 40 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, and was an active circle member for many years. Helen was an avid reader.
Preceding Helen in death were her parents and one brother, Lowell and his wife Arlys Miller.
Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Carlos Bryan of Aurelia; three sons; Steven and his wife Frances Bryan of New Cannan, Conn.; Scott and his wife Shuyuan Bryan of Cedar Rapids; and Craig and his wife Nancy Bryan of Apple Valley, Minn. Also surviving are four grandchildren - Christine and her husband Law Biddle, Laura and her husband Andy Podmolik, Emily Bryan, and Peter Bryan, and many friends.
