Thursday, September 15, 2011

LAURENS - The Alta-Aurelia volleyball team played in a tournament here on Saturday and played matches against Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer, West Bend-Mallard, and Northwest Conference foe Laurens-Marathon.

The Warriors lost to both L-M and WB-M in two games, but beat Pocahontas Area/P-P, 2 games to 1, coming back from a 7-1 deficit in the final game to take the game 15-8 and win the match.

A-A coach Jeannie Henningsen said she was really encoraged with the team's play Saturday, feeling that the Warriors passed and served well and "were in each game that we played."

Against West Bend-Mallard, sophomore Tayler Rohwer and junior Katie Turnquist each had three kills, while junior Taler Stanton had six digs and freshman Erica Lockin had four. Turnquist, Jill Buckendahl, and Kelsi Snyder were all successful on each of their serves, and Rohwer was 5-7 with 4 ace serves.

Against Laurens-Marathon, Alexis Hernandez led the team with six kills while Buckendahl had six digs. Rohwer was 5-5 serving with three ace serves; Stanton was 7-8 with three aces; and Buckendahl was 8-10, also with three aces.

In the win over PA/P-P, coach Henningsen said that "Kelsi (Snyder) and Taler (Stanton) got on a roll with their serving and we got all the momentum on our side."

Snyder connected on all nine of her serve attempts, including two ace serves, and Stanton was 6-7, also with two ace serves. Tayler Rohwer was 9-10, including four aces; Gracie Winterhof was 8-9 with one ace; and Jill Buckendahl was 5-6 with one ace serve.

Alexis Hernadez led in kills with eight, while Katie Turnquist had six. Turnquist also had seven digs to lead the team in that area and Jenna Snyder dished out seven assists and Kelsi Snyder 11.
