Warriors fall short against HMS

Winning PAT attempt stopped

ALTA - Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (3-1 overall, 2-0 in District play) stopped host Alta-Aurelia (1-4, 0-2) on a two-point conversion attempt in the final seconds here on Friday and held on for a 45-44 win over the Warriors.

Alta-Aurelia's Jalen Henningsen, who totaled 189 yards rushing on 18 carries, scored his second touchdown of the game to bring the Warriors within one point, but the Hawks stopped a similar effort for the two-point conversion and held on for the win.

Garret VanHouten rushed for 78 yards on 14 carries for Alta-Aurelia, including a 28-yard score. Manuel Murillo and Joe Napierala each scored a touchdown on a short run and Napierala also tossed a 10 yard touchdown pass to Alex Stephan.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn senior running back Troy Simons had an incredible 42 rushing attempts on the night and he amassed 368 yards and scored three touchdowns, including one 56-yard effort. Teammates Jacob Clark and Logan Rozeboom totaled 188 yards rushing between them, giving the trio an incredible total of 556 yards on the ground.

The Hawks' Cade Harvey also completed a 35 yard touchdown pass to Mark Benz. Brett Flynn made both of his PAT kick attempts and also added a 22 yard field goal for the winning HMS squad. Junior Jacob Clark had seven tackles, including three for losses, for the Hawks.

Alta-Aurelia travels to Albert City on Friday to take on Sioux Central, also 0-2 in District play.
