WHS grads shine for BVU VB team

STORM LAKE - Kelsey Essick, and Lacie Drennan, both 2008 graduates of Cherokee Washington High School, are currecntly members of the 2011 Buena Vista University volleyball team.

Kelsey,the daughter of Steve and Marla Essick of Cherokee, leads the team in digs with 126 so far in the season, and now has 503 in her career., including a season-high 21 digs in a non-conference match-up with Carleton College.

Drennan, the daughter of David Drennan and Sherry Wilchester, leads the team in kills with 137 and in hitting percentage with .249. and she's moved into eighth on the program's all-time kills list with 530. Drennan had a season-high 21 kills against both Martin Luther College and Carleton College. She is also currently second on the team this season in digs with 120.

The Buena Vista volleyball team played the first of two home matches during Homecoming Week on Tuesday night, and evened its season home record at 1-1 with a convincing 3-1 non-conference triumph over visiting Bethany Lutheran College (4-10).

Senior Lacie Drennan, a former Cherokee Washington prep, turned in a match-high 15 kills and a strong .324 attack percentage to go along with 13 digs and six total blocks for BVU. Freshman Kirsten VanZuiden followed with nine kills, and freshman Courtney Van Haaften, an Alta-Aurelia graduate, dished out 39 assists, becoming the first player in the league to reach 500 assists this season, as she raised her season total to 518. Senior Kelsey Essick, another former Cherokee Washington graduate, tallied a match-high 16 digs, while junior Bailey Schafbuch added 13.

Buena Vista is now 4-11 overall and gets back into Iowa Conference play Friday night at 7 p.m.when it hosts Cornell College.
