Warrior girls lose to St. Mary's

Monday, October 10, 2011

ALTA - The Alta-Aurelia volleyball team finished regular season play with a Senior Night match here against Storm Lake St. Mary's on Thursday.

The Warriors had six seniors - Bethany Boeck, Kelsey Brake, Jill Buckendahl, Alexis Hernandez, Kelsey McGowan and Alyssa Turnquist- and Coach Jeannie Henningsen said they have all done a good job leading the team this season.

"They have given four years to the volleyball team," said the coach, "and it was good to see them shine tonight."

Although St. Mary's topped the Warriors, 3 games to 1, Coach Henningsen said the team played well, especially in games 3 and 4.

"We just needed a few more offensive opportunities to get this match," she said.

Alexis Hernandez had 13 kills to lead the Warriors' offense, while Tina Heschke had five. Jill Buckendahl had 15 digs and was 12-12 serving with two ace serves; Katie Turnquist was 16-17 with three aces; Taler Stanton 13-13 with three aces; and Kelsi Snyder was 17-18 with three aces with 20 assists and 14 digs.

Coach Henningsen said, "I thought Alexis played the best match of her career with 13 kills, and Kelsi did a nice job of running the offense."

The Warriors finished with an overall mark of 6-22 and were 1-9 in Twin Lakes Conference play. Their next match will be in the Conference tournament in Newell on Tuesday.
