Thursday, October 13, 2011

HAWARDEN - Nicki Schwarz of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union finished first in 17:41 to win the Class B girls title at last week's West Sioux Cross Country Invitational here.

The MMC Eagles placed second in the girls team competition behind champion Le Mars Gehlen. The Jays scored 23 points and MMC/RU 32.

Other top finishers for the MMC-RU girls were Sarah Bird 6th in 19:15, Sydney Roberts 8th in 20:09, heather Hoefling 10th in 20:46, Amber Niesius 11th in 20:51, and Anna Wilcox 12th in 21:26. The top 15 runners earned Varsity Medals.

"It was good for Nicki to get the gold medal, she's been rop five in many races this season," noted MMC/RU coach Ric Collins. "All the girls ran well with winds up to 40 mph at times. The times would have been 1-2 minutes faster if it was calm."

Zach Kellog paced the MMC/RU boys varsity, placing 14th in 23:08, followed by Nathan Ruba 17th in 23:46, Jacob Pearson 19th in 24:40, and Mitch Brady 22nd in 26:06.

In girls JV action for MMC/RU, Kim Schroeder was timed in 22:36, followed by Tina Wilkens 25:01, Jill Letsche 25:13, Casey Wurth 26:36, and Jeri Welp 27:05.
