Jerry R. Jensen, 73, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Aurelia, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011 at the Lakes Regional Healthcare of Spirit Lake.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Aurelia, with the Rev. Larry G. Lemke officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Aurelia. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m.on Sunday at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake and the Nicklas D Jensen Funeral Home of Alta are in charge of arrangements.

Gerald "Jerry" Russell Jensen was born on April 26, 1938 to Lois and Russell Jensen in Holstein. He was baptized on June 24, 1944 and confirmed on April 6, 1952 in Galva. Jerry attended Galva High School, graduating in 1956. He played football while attending Morningside College from 1956 to 1959, and He served in the National Guard from 1960 to 1966.

On Dec. 27, 1959, Jerry married Jean Grieme at St. John's Lutheran Church in Galva. They lived and farmed south of Aurelia from 1959 to 1974. Sons, Jason and Jed were born during this time. The family moved to Aurelia, where Jerry owned and operated Jensen Insurance, an independent agency, from 1973 until the present and was also the manager of Maple Valley Mutual since 1994.

Recently, Jerry and Jean had relocated to Spirit Lake, where they enjoyed spending time at the Lakes. They also enjoyed spending time with grandchildren, particularly attending their school activities in Spirit Lake and Sioux City.

Jerry was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a member of Kiwanis, and received the George Hixson award in 2001, and was also a director of First Trust Savings Bank.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Jean of Spirit Lake; sons, Jason (Maggie) of Sioux City, and Jed (Amy) of Spirit Lake; grandchildren, Josh and Megan of Sioux City, and Trevor, Connor and Zachary Jensen of Spirit Lake; sisters, Judy (Darrell) Murray of Naples, Fla., and Joanne Brandt of Flower Mound, Texas; brother, Jon (Roxie) of Galva; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters-in-law, Ardie Grieme and Betty Drey; and brother-in-law, Burdette Grieme.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
