The Friends of the Library is an organization committed to assisting the library purchase items which are not in their yearly budget and the Book Basket project is their major fundraising project each year.
Following the 2010 project, they were able to purchase rhythm instruments for the children's department, provide the money for enrollment in the Wilbur system that provides downloadable books for library patrons, the books for the Wilbur system, audio books, and new folding tables.
Individuals and organizations have assembled book baskets, each of which has a theme. The baskets contain a book as well as a variety of theme-based items. These popular, fun baskets provide a variety of different options for holiday gift giving.
The public is invited to visit the library and browse the diverse selection of baskets. Then, if your wish, you can submit a "silent" auction bid for a basket on a clipboard next to each basket. The bidding will close at noon on Saturday, Dec. 3. At that time, the final person listed on each bid sheet will be awarded the basket.
All baskets will be on display at the library beginning the first week of November. Some baskets will appeal to young people, some to adults, some to women, some to men, and still others may appeal to a broad spectrum of people.
On Nov. 4, the Cherokee Chamber Coffee will be held at the Cherokee Public Library starting at 9:30 a.m. Organizers hope everyone will take time to stop at the Cherokee Public Library and check out the book baskets.
