PAULLINA - South O'Brien lost its final regular season game, 12-7, here Friday night to the visiting Sioux Central Rebels.
The Rebels scored first after they received great field position after a shanked punt. The visitors then scored on an 11 yard pass with 1:11 to go in the first quarter. The 2pt conversion failed.
Sioux Central then turned the ball over on a fumble and gave South O'Brien pretty good field position. The Wolverines' ensuing drive culminated in a 5 yard touchdown run by Zach Nieman. Michael Callahan kicked the extra point to give the Wolverines a 7-6 lead with 3:08 to go in the second quarter.
The third quarter started with both defenses playing well. With 6:18 to go in the third quarter, the Rebel quarterback got around end and weaved his way to a 41 yard touchdown run. The two point conversion failed, and that was the end of the scoring for the night, as Sioux Central took a 12-7 win over the Wolverines.
Zach Nieman finished the game with 27 carries for 105 yards for SOS.
Defensively, Sam Weber had two interceptions and Matt DeVos had a sack and a fumble recovery. Tanner Mathews led the team with seven solo tackles and eight assists.
Wolverines coach Mark Fuhrman said, "We just didn't have it together tonight. We talked all week about being ready to play. It just seemed like we had that "deer in the headlights" look on our faces. We can't just show up and figure the other team is going to lie down for us."
The Wolverines (5-5) travel to Lawton tonight for the first round of the 2011 play-offs, their first post season play since 1992. Sioux Central (6-3) also qualified for the playoffs, and they take on Manson/Northwest Webster in Manson tonight.
The District's other playoff representatives, defending State Champ West Lyon and undfeeated and #2 - ranked Emmetsburg also have first round games tonight, with West Lyon (7-2) hosting IKM-Manning (6-3) and Emmetsburg (9-0) hosting Prairie Valley (5-4).
