Food is an important part of the holiday season.

Between the tasty food and the busy schedules, it's easy for normal eating patterns to take a back seat during the holidays.

ISU Extension and Outreach in Cherokee County, in partnership with Western Iowa Tech Community College and Hy-Vee, is offering a "Learning with Lunch" program on Wednesday, Nov. 9, from noon to 1 p.m. to help you learn how to balance healthy eating with holiday eating.

The program will be held at the Western Iowa Tech Community College Campus in Cherokee and will be taught by Renee Sweers, ISU Extension and Outreach Family Nutrition & Health Program Specialist.

The following topics will be covered in the program:

* Planning menus for a healthy holiday season

* Fitting treats, sweets, and favorite eats into healthy holiday eating

* Saving money on the holiday food budget

* Food safety tips for holiday meals, buffets, and leftovers

* Healthy Holiday recipes

Cost for the program is $6 per person, which includes lunch. Pre-registration is required and will be taken until the day before the event to assure the correct number of lunches are available. Please call the Cherokee County Extension Office at (712) 225-6196, or email xcherokee@iastate.edu to preregister.

"Learning with Lunch" is a series of workshops focusing on a different topic each month through April, 2012. December's program will be on Winter Wildlife.
