County receives grant for wind, tornado damage

Residents of Cherokee County, who experienced loss to their homes due to tornado and windstorms may be eligible for assistance.

Cherokee County is the recipient of the 2011 Wind, Tornado Damage Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) based on the April 2011 tornado/wind storm event. The award of $200,000 is for the entire county and is a total award. Each household will receive smaller amounts depending on damage to the home.

The grant funding is for low to moderate income residents of Cherokee County who have no insurance or are underinsured. Owner-owned houses that have been repaired or need reconstruction or rehabilitation are eligible. Rental houses and businesses are not applicable.

Residents of Cherokee County need to contact Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council (SIMPCO) with their name, address, and phone number at 712.279.6286. The deadline to contact SIMPCO is Dec. 12.
