SERGEANT BLUFF - The Cherokee Washington High girls basketball team, employing a frequent, multiple substitution offense, dropped their season opener to fourth-ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton 65-40 here Tuesday night.
Megan Hummel led the meager Cherokee offensive effort with 10 points, while Shanon Shaefer tallied nine, and Megan Carlson and Katie Sambrano four apiece.
The host Warriors were led by Kelsey Prescott with 22 points, and Amber Schubert 21.
The hustling Hummel led Cherokee in rebounding with 13, followed by Jackie Wilson 10, and Sambrano eight. Hummel also led in steals with seven, and Sambrano had four, and Shaefer three.
SB-L jumped to a 17-10 lead in the first quarter, and pushed that margin to 33-23 at halftime, before taking 45-29 lead into the final quarter.
Cherokee sank 15-50 field goals for 30 percent, including just 2-31 three-pointers.
