Area students earn IIAC All-Academic status

CEDAR RAPIDS -The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced the Fall sports members of its 2011-2012 All-Academic Team. Three hundred twenty-four student-athletes from the Conference's eight fall championship sports met the requirements for recognition.

To be eligible for IIAC All-Academic Team honors a student-athlete must compete at the varsity level, be at least a sophomore in academic standing and attain a 3.5 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

The Fall 2011 membership of the All-Academic Team is comprised of 112 seniors, 109 juniors, and 103 sophomores. Luther College placed a Conference-high 59 student-athletes on the Team. followed by Wartburg College (47 student-athletes), Simpson College (45), Central College (42), University of Dubuque (40), Buena

Vista University (29), Coe College (23), Cornell College (21), and Loras College (18). Eighty-nine of the student-athletes are cross country runners (45 men, 44 women). Soccer was next with 83 student-athletes (52 women, 31 men), followed closely by football with 70. Rounding out the Fall 2011 honorees are 38 volleyball players, 28 women's tennis players, and 16 women's golfers.

Four students who are graduates of Chronicle-Times area high schools were among the student-athletes honored, including three former Galva-Holstein graduates - Jayde Boyle, Maddy McAreavey,and Mark Cronin. All three are currently juniors at Simpson College, where Cronin is majoring in Economics and Accounting; Boyle in Mathematics, and McAreavey in Mathematics and History.

Also on the honored list was Cherokee Washington High School graduate Kelsey Essick, who is currently a senior at Buena Vista University, majoring in Exercise Science.
