MARCUS - Balanced scoring and a resounding 17-4 lead after the first quarter propelled the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys to a convincing 63-31 win over West Sioux in War Eagle Conference basketball action here Tuesday night.
Dylan Spieler paced the Eagle offense with 12 points, followed by Zach Specht 10, Nate Rassel 10, Andrew Hoefling nine, and Tyler Prunty eight.
Kembe Kooi led the visiting Falcons with 21 game-high points.
Prunty and Hoefling led a strong rebounding effort for MMC with seven boards each, and Spieler snagged six.
MMC sank 27-62 field goals for 44 percent, including 2-12 three-balls, and 7-10 free throws. West Sioux netted 12-42 shots for 29 percent, was 4-16 from three-point land, and meshed just 3-4 free throws.
The Eagles led 30-12 at halftime and then outscored the Falcons 33-19 in the second half to secure the win.
"Our press was effective and it helped us to get a total of 18 steals on the night," said MMC coach Pat Bird. "We had a nice balance in the scoring column, and we outrebounded them 31-23. This was a good team victory for us."
MMC hosts Akron-Westfield tonight in a WEC doubleheader also featuring the 12th-ranked MMC girls.
