Cherokee residents asked to note City recycling changes

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

The Cherokee City Council has taken action to make recycling MANDATORY for all residents, including apartment residents, businesses and industry.

Sanitary Services will continue to pick up from residents on either Thursday or Friday, subject to your location.

Many businesses already recycle much of their waste stream. Managers of apartment buildings and businesses that currently do not recycle should immediately contact Sanitary Services to make arrangements for pickup of their recyclables.

*IF YOU THINK IT MIGHT BE RECYCLABLE, THROW IT IN!

Residents of Cherokee are fortunate in that all recyclables go through a separation process at the landfill. Residents do NOT have to separate recyclables. Paper, cardboard, glass and plastic bottles, cans, aluminum trays and pans - all can be tossed into the same container for recycling.

*BLUE BAG PROGRAM NO LONGER REQUIRED

Residents no longer are required to use blue bags for recycling. Clear or transparent bags or any type of garbage can may be used - provided that the container is marked with a large "R" designating it for recycling products only, and that the filled container weighs no more than 50 pounds. Clear or transparent bags do not need to be marked.

Effective January 1, 2012, the City of Cherokee will no longer offer the blue bags at City Hall. For residents who wish to continue using bags for their recyclables, most hardware and grocery stores in Cherokee will have the clear or transparent heavy-duty bags available.
