Msgr. Kenneth Seifried officiated. Burial took place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cherokee. Visitation was from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. There was a prayer service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday followed by a rosary at the funeral home. Military services will be provided by the V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of Cherokee. John M. Sauer, son of Milo and Mae (Caley) Sauer, was born on June 19, 1931 in Cherokee. He graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Cherokee. John furthered his education at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn. and University of Iowa in Iowa City. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and servedduring the Korean War from 1952 -- 1954.
On Jan. 14, 1957, John married Mary Ann Schoening at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cherokee. To this union four children were born, Nancy, Joan, Tom and Bill. John and Mary made their home in Cherokee.
John was a longtime member of the Cherokee business community as owner of Sauer's Clothing. John took over the business from his father, Milo. In their retirement years, John and Mary spent the winter months in either Arizona or Texas.
John was an avid golfer, Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan. A favorite family memory is the weekend in May 1987 when John and Mary Ann both scored Holes-in-one on consecutive days at the Cherokee Country Club.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Mae Sauer and his beloved wife, Mary Ann Sauer.
John is survived by his children, Nancy Sauer of Minneapolis, Minn.; Joan (Mark) Maszk of Omaha, Neb., Tom Sauer and Bill Sauer of Omaha, Neb., one granddaughter, Caley Mae Maszk of Omaha, Neb., other relatives and friends.
