To the editor:
It is disappointing that the city council of Aurelia, Iowa has decided to take this course of action regarding Mr. Sak's needs to employ a service dog.
Mr. Sak, who is a disabled Vietnam Veteran, has rights under the American with Disabilities Act to utilize a service dog and this is another example of a local city council obfuscating the balance of a federal law which protects private citizens from an overburdening local law.
If the Aurelia City Council wanted to take a corrective course of action, they should provide certain exemptions of "pit bulls" if they are a service dog because a service dog has a unique set of skills which prohibits them from being a danger to a community because they are dedicated to the services of a disabled individual.
If this is how our communities' pay tribute to our Nations' veterans, then we, as a community, need to take a good, close look at our values.
